Scratch Out Hunger.

Jul 24, 2019

Spirit of Huntington is always looking for ways to bring creative expression to our community. We are so excited to be part of a project that brought four community groups together to work on an extraordinary project. Julia Fasciano, Shay Lublin and Tatiana Marr of Girl Scout Troop 954 of Suffolk County worked with The Spirit of Huntington’s ArtWORKS team to implement their first annual Scratch Out Hunger Food Drive in cooperation with the South Huntington Union Free School District.

Scratch Out Hunger is a district-wide food drive created by Julia, Shay and Tatiana to provide food to local pantries including Joseph’s Storehouse of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Over the summer, students who are part of the NSLP (National School Lunch Program), do not have a steady source of nutritional meals, so the girls felt this was the most opportune time to host their “Scratch Out Hunger” Food Drive. Additionally, pantry donations decline during the summer months. This was another reason the girls selected June for their series of food drives.

The girls worked with our ArtWORKS team on brainstorming logos, presentation and creative input.  We met many times over the course of the year and were so proud when the girls presented their idea to the SHUFSD Board of Education, both in December and again in May.

We are happy to say that the SHUFSD Board of Education and Girl Scouts of Suffolk County approved their proposal, and Scratch Our Hunger will now be a yearly initiative within South Huntington Schools!

Congratulations to Julia, Shay and Tatiana for earning their Girl Scout Bronze Award!!  You have made a lasting impact on your community.
