Holiday Happiness With The Veterans

Jan 5, 2012

The Spirit of Huntington celebrated the holidays in a special way this year by sharing our Trim the Tree Party with our friends at the Northport VA Hospital. We created custom ornaments by hand painting glass balls in our favorite artists’ styles, while white lights and a bright star finished our decoration of the special tree.
But the real treat was sharing our hot chocolate and yummy treats with our honorable veterans. Judy Ingrassia, Head of Nursing and Shirley Pancir, Nurse Educator brought the Veterans to our center via shuttle bus. A good time was had by all as the children greeted our guests with handmade cards and cupcakes, as well as desserts donated by local restaurants, Bin 56, Red and Porto Vivo. The kids from the center were able to share all their newly acquired art knowledge and highlight their favorite artists as they presented the special projects that we worked on recently.
It was heartwarming to see our children so respectfully interacting with our veterans as they shared stories of their service, their families and their lives with the kids. The children were so excited to learn so much from these gentlemen. The excitement really kicked up another notch when we got a special visit from none other than Kris Kringle himself!
Santa made sure to hand out candy canes and lots of love as we all got great pictures and warm memories from our party. The veterans were happy to see all the great art and are excited to start their own classes at the center.
It must be the ghost of George Washington still calling our veterans to serve our community! Most importantly, our special kids and honorable vets both seem to get ‘special love’ from each other during the holiday season, which is all about love and supporting each other!
